I met Rick 25 years ago when my 1969 van backfired and quit literally in front of his driveway. It was close to closing time and he invited me in. In 5 minutes, he discovered a loose, broken wire to the coil. Rick replaced it and did some fine tuning and had the van running better than ever. Oh, by the way... NO CHARGE. We have become great friends over the years. Rick has repaired, rebuilt, welded, replaced, maintained and overhauled many parts and components on about a dozen vans for me. Rick refuses to use any cheaply made replacement parts. Every engine he has rebuilt for me has exceeded my expectations and is often half the price of any local shop. You will not find a more honest, knowledgable, fair, trustworthy and nicer man than Mr. Hogg. As I always say, Tell Rick that Pete sent you. You will not be disappointed. Outstanding.

Lately, we have a '74 Westfalia that he has helped us maintain in perfect mechanical order for the past four years. Rick is personable, knowledgeable and can deliver the goods. Had to have an engine "re-do" on my daily driver '90 Westfalia. Other local shops said come back in three months!!! Rick said bring it out here on Wednesday, and I will have a look. One week later, back on the road with my, according to Rick, "this thing is a rocket!!!" Very knowledgable, can make the final bill easier to take.

So great to find a good old fashioned one man shop with a competent mechanic/owner. Being in a rural location the overhead is lower so shop rates are lower. Being a one man shop means you know who is going to work on your vehicle and, in this case, it is a skilled, caring, friendly, experienced guy who has your best interests at heart. This is evidenced by the lengths he goes to to find the best parts, not just the cheapest, whenever possible and also to install selected used parts when appropriate. Rick has a deep knowledge and appreciation of Volkswagen vans old and newer. I took our 360,000km 1991 Westy in for a tricky intermittent dying-at-idle condition. Rick's thorough and intelligent analysis uncovered numerous undone and partly done elements to service jobs performed over the last 3 years and a number of items in urgent need of attention, not least of which was a spark plug wire set that was apparently original. Work was done impressively quickly - it was as if he *enjoyed* the job (that's a novelty!). Summary: Rick Hogg is good troubleshooter, not a parts plugger, is easy to talk to, is informative, has good rates and (and this speaks volumes) has a perfectly well-organized shop. We could not be happier. Beyond excellent, and "yes" we recommend!

Rick puts the Folk back into the VW industry. I was quoted $2000 in repairs by another well-known VW shop and walked out of Hogg's at $285 with a lot more service and priceless peace of mind. As a certified mechanic, he is fair, experienced, friendly and will go that extra mile just to help you out. I look forward to continuing doing business with him!
